This piece of pottery was hand-molded by Doña Sofía Reyes and is another excellent example of her artistic talents. Doña Sofía Reyes has been making pottery for over 75 years and continues to create her pottery utilizing the same artistic techniques of her Zapotec ancestors. This specific piece of black-clay pottery was molded then had the intricate floral designs carved and etched out of the clay. Additionally, Doña Sofía Reyes used her fingers to give the top of this vase the wavy shape that it has. Once the shaping and decorative carving of the clay is complete, this vase was then fired in a traditional wood burning underground kiln. After being fired in the kiln, this vase was polished with a chunk of quartz to give it the glossy shine present in the finished work.
This piece of black-clay pottery measures 9" Tall and 5" Wide. It is NOT safe to put water in this vase, it is of the decorative style and has not been fired in the kiln long enough to make the clay strong enough to hold water.
