This piece of pottery was hand-molded by Doña Sofía Reyes and is a fantastic representation of her artistic talents. Doña Sofía Reyes has been making pottery for over 75 years and continues to create her pottery utilizing the same artistic techniques of her Zapotec ancestors. This specific piece of black-clay pottery was molded then had the elaborate designs of full and setting suns carved into the clay before finally being fired in an old wood burning underground kiln. After being fired in the kiln, this piece of pottery was then polished with a chunk of quartz to give the top portion the glossy shine present in the finished work. Additionally, this piece carries the signature of Simón Reyes, the business run by Doña Sofía Reyes, which is shown in the embedded image above.
This piece of black-clay pottery measures 12.5" Tall and 5" Wide. It is NOT safe to put water in this vase, it is of the decorative style and has not been fired in the kiln long enough to make the clay strong enough to hold water.
