This beautiful sunset scene vase was molded, textured, colored, and decoratively carved all by the hands of Acoma artisans Sharylm and Keith Chino. The landscape scenery that is carved into this vase represents the most well known landmarks of the Acoma lands in New Mexico, USA. Most notably is the depiction of the Acoma pueblo, located atop of a tall sand-stone mesa, which is recognizable because of the presence of the bell-tower of the San Esteban Rey church and other buildings of the village. Also, very well-known and easily identifiable is the Enchanted Mesa, located at close proximity to the Acoma pueblo mesa, this isolated and shear faced mesa holds spiritual significance to the Acoma people who originally lived atop this mesa before moving to the current location of the Acoma pueblo. Other images carved into this vase but not shown include Mt. Taylor, the Black Mesa, and eagles soaring in the sky above the Acoma land. Also, the coloring of this piece portrays a beautiful New Mexico sun setting behind the Acoma pueblo, and is an example of a very challenging glazing technique to create these color combinations. Additionally, this piece is hand-signed by the artist Keith Chino and wears his distinctive arrowhead insignia, which guarantees this piece’s uniqueness and authenticity.
