This conga drum was completely made by hand by artisan Kynma Mukwaya of the Buganda tribal culture from Uganda. Kynma hand-carved this drum from a single piece of wood using rudimentary tools like a handsaw, hammer and chisel, sand-paper, various knives, and other carving tools. Once the carving of the drum is completed, it is sanded and painted. The final stage of creating this drum is pulling and applying the leather drumhead, which is tightened with the braided ropes.

This drum is special because on the base artist Kynma Mukwaya added a covering of woven reeds dyed purple, green, orange, red, black and orange. The addition of this colorful woven base makes this drum truly unique.

This drum is of the very popular West African djembe style of conga drum, which was taught to artist Kynma Mukwaya by an NGO worker over 15 years ago. Today, Kynma is widely regarded as the most talented manufacturer of this type of drum in Uganda and his drums are featured in many prominent hotels and shops within the capital city of Kampala.

This drum measures 17" tall, has a drumhead diameter of 10", and the opening at the base is 4.5" in diameter. Being a large size, this drum offers the player a wide range of drumming sounds from a very high pitch along the edges to a deeper base sound within the center of the drumhead. It is both a high-quality drum as well as a hand-made work of art, and can be appreciated for both these qualities.
