This traditional bark cloth painting entitled "Guardians of Uganda" was created by artist Gerrald Kabuye from Uganda. Gerrald painted this portrait of two crested cranes, two giraffes, an elephant, and two zebras. Gerrald painted this portrait with orange, white and black colors because of his artistic desire to compliment the natural tones of bark cloth. Each animal overlaps the others and it seems that they are sharing each others bodies; Gerrald did this to symbolize the inter-connectedness and dependency of all natural life upon one another. The crested crane, the giraffe, the elephant, and the zebra all in different ways depend on one another for their survival. Additionally, Gerralds unique use of complimentary and off-setting colors is done to represent the two sexes of each animal.
Artist Gerrald Kabuye paints many of his portraits to depict the wildlife of Uganda which is so important to the country's image and are often used to represent his homeland. The crested crane is the national bird of Uganda and is present on all Ugandan currency as well as is featured in the country's coat-of-arms. The crested crane, giraffe, elephant and the zebra are some of the most popular animals in Uganda and this painting represents the importance of these animals to the country's national identity.
This extra-large sized bark cloth painting measures 25.5" long and 18.5" wide. This is a wonderfully unique, traditional, and originally hand-signed by the artist 'Kabuye' painting that will look absolutely amazing in a simple black frame.
