This cowry shell and beads necklace was created by Mahama Zuruka an artisan of the Ga tribal culture from Ghana. Decorated with black beads of small and medium sizes as well as eighteen cowry shells of increasing sizes. The cowry shell was used as a form of currency among many African tribes before the arrival of the British and so this shell continues to have historical and cultural significance.
For centuries, all across Africa, beads have been prized both as ornament and as forms of currency. A person’s wealth and status has always been associated with the size and number of beads worn. In some tribes, beads and beaded jewelry make up the bridal dowry; in others they are used as currency, and in still others beads are believed to have magical powers.
This necklace is an excellent example of traditional African tribal style and artwork.
