KWABLA Global Links believes in the benefits to all people from fair trade. Therefore, KWABLA has implemented the following fair trade policies in its business operation:
Fair Wages
KWABLA offers fair compensation to its partnered artisans for the cultural goods and works of art that they create. KWABLA purchases all items directly from these artisans at prices that have been set by the artisans themselves. Additionally, KWABLA often sends payment in advance for the items it purchases in order to cover the artisans' material costs and provide them with income while they are creating their goods. In this way, KWABLA offers fair wages to its partnered artisans for the items they create.
Child Labor
KWABLA does not support child labor and refuses to work with any artisan or cooperative of artisans that uses child labor in the creation of their products. KWABLA ensures that child labor is not occurring by meeting with each of its partnered artisans individually before agreeing to enter into a supply relationship. KWABLA only partners with artisans that have a great deal of experience in their craft or artwork and can demonstrate their expertise in the trade. These individual artists could be considered master craftsmen.
KWABLA strongly encourages that all children attend school and KWABLA works with its artisans to provide better opportunities for their children. If KWABLA discovers that a partnered artisan or cooperative of artists is using child labor in the creation of their products, KWABLA will immediately end the partnership and discontinue offering items from the individual artisan or group of artists.
Environmental Sustainability
KWABLA cares deeply about environmental issues and works to ensure that the raw materials used by its partnered artisans in the creation of their crafts and artwork are managed in a sustainable manner. This is poses a unique challenge for KWABLA because the majority of the artisans that KWABLA partners with operate small, home-based workshops where they create crafts and artwork using the same materials and techniques that their ancestors have done. However, it is important that these artists understand that the clay, wood, stone, wool or other materials that they use in creating their products must be harvested in a manner that ensures these materials will exist for the use and enjoyment of future generations. To this end, KWABLA strongly encourages and advises its artisans to take only what they need to do their work and, where possible, to recycle and replant their raw materials as much as possible.
If KWABLA discovers that a partnered artisan or cooperative of artists is damaging or exploiting their environment and natural resources through the negligent use of raw materials or other environmentally harmful activities, KWABLA will immediately end the partnership and discontinue offering items from the individual artisan or group of artists.
Consumer Education
KWABLA educates consumers about the importance of purchasing fairly traded products which support living wages and healthy working conditions. By conducting business in a manner that respects workers' rights and the environment, KWABLA strives to educate consumers about the often hidden human costs of their "bargains." By providing information about artisans' history, culture and living conditions, KWABLA enhances cross-cultural understanding and respect between consumers and communities in the developing world.
Promotion of Cultural Identity
KWABLA encourages the production and development of products based on artisans' cultural traditions adapted for Western markets. KWABLA promotes the artistic talents of its partnered artisans in a way that preserves and promotes their cultural identity.
